What does gas smell like?

The most common smell of a gas leak is a sulfur-like or rotten egg smell. This smell is added to natural gas as a safety measure for people to detect leaks. (sometimes there may not be smell)

Carbon Monoxide Poisoning

We also need to be aware of Carbon Monoxide leaks – this will be detected by your carbon monoxide alarm in your property.

If your carbon monoxide alarm goes off in your property:

  • Leave the building immediately and get out into the fresh air
  • Switch off your fuel-burning appliances and open windows on your way out of the building
  • Seek urgent medical advice from your GP (For low levels of carbon monoxide) or your Accident and Emergency Department if you think you have been exposed to high levels.
