Gypsy, Roma & Traveller History Month 2025

Every June since 2008, people from across the UK have celebrated Gypsy, Roma and Traveller History Month (GRTHM). Through celebration, education and raising awareness, Gypsy, Roma and Traveller History Month helps to tackle prejudice, change the story, and amplify the voices of Gypsies, Roma and Travellers in wider society.

To kick start the month and In the lead-up to the Whirligig Outdoor Arts Festival, the Super Culture team collaborated with young people at our Greenfields Way Gypsy and Traveller site in Weston to help shape the programme. They suggested acts they wanted to see, which then influenced the final line-up! Circus workshops were later delivered by NoFit State and Farm Yard Circus.

The project was funded by Without Walls UK, with illustrations by the talented live sketch artist Jazz Thompson, whose drawings from the event are showcased across our social media channels.

The celebrations carried on as we explored this year’s GRTHM theme, “Heroes' Month: Who inspires you?” with residents at our Marsh Lane site in South Somerset. Residents enjoyed a picnic and expressed who their heroes are through storytelling and crafts.

Henry’s story

Resident Henry’s journey is a testament to self-determination and pride in his roots. Having only spent three weeks in school before leaving to work and support himself. Even from a young age, Henry was motivated by a strong inner drive - he recalls that whatever he was shown, he would always try to do it well, and then find ways to do it even better. Henry has called Marsh Lane home since 1978. Alongside his sister Lily, they were the first two residents on the site, helping to shape the community that still thrives there today.
