Working in Partnership With SARI

Elim is proud to work with SARI as part of our approach to supporting customers or colleagues who may encounter hate crime.

SARI provides free and confidential support for anyone who is a victim of hate crime across Avon and Somerset, and also works to build greater understanding and respect for diversity and difference within our community.

Hate crime can have a huge impact on someone’s quality of life and can influence how they feel about their home and their community. It can also significantly affect a person’s health, both physically and mentally.

Elim does not tolerate any forms of hate related behaviour. We will support victims, working with partner organisations such as SARI and local Police forces to act against people found to be committing hate crimes within our communities.

Partnering with SARI allows us to better support our residents and colleagues. SARI will also support Elim’s learning and development programme to enhance our colleagues’ knowledge and understanding of equality, diversity and cultural awareness.

Anyone can be a victim of a hate crime at any time. Latest Home Office statistics show the number of annual hate crimes recorded in England and Wales rose by 26% – to 155,841 in the year to March 2022.

What is hate crime?

A hate incident, or hate crime, is where the victim or any other person, understands it to be motivated by hostility or prejudice towards their identity. These can include:

• Disability (including mental health)
• Gender identity
• Ethnicity or race
• Religion or belief
• Sexual orientation
• Age

Why should I report hate crime?

Hate crime is a very serious matter. Many people are reluctant to report hate crime through fear of retaliation. But reporting it allows agencies to work together to monitor and investigate reported incidents, and to take action to prevent these incidents from happening. It also sends a clear message that hate will not be tolerated within our communities.

Reporting can make a difference to you, your friends or family, and your community.
